I have a personal grievance with Lin - Manuel Miranda over " The Scuttlebutt . "

Ahoy! A newDisney live-actionremake is upon us, which means it’s time to fightover the songsour glorious mouse overlords decided to add, amend, and axe through the wondrous process of adaptation.

So, here are some of the biggest musical changes from the 1989 animatedTheLittle Mermaidto the 2023 live-action version:

mark : I ’m focusing on call with language , though there are some changes to the score .

ADDED: “For the First Time.”

Ariel sustain a new solo in this version , voicing her thoughts when she first gets to land as a human . Not going to lie , I missed a decent chunk of this in the theatre because I run low to the bathroom , reckon that the hatchway pleximetry signify that " Scuttlebutt " was diddle . Ah well , the final snatch I saw was very moving . Dare I say , it ’s the best new addition — greatly help by Halle ’s wonderfully affectional vocal .

My only squawk are with the lines : " Squeeze in the horseshoe and the corset … Some women prefer this , I guess it ’s alright . " Very choice feminist movement of you , Lin !

AXED: “Les Poissons.”

AMENDED: “Kiss the Girl.”

The lyric change here are pretty subtle — " Possible she need you too , there is one fashion to ask her " is changed to " utilize your words , boy , and ask her . " Composer Alan Menkenaddressedthis in April , explaining , " There are some lyric changes in ' Kiss the Girl ' because people have gotten very sensible about the theme that [ Prince Eric ] would , in any way , force himself on [ Ariel ] . "

More detectable is that Scuttle and Flounder also blab out in this version . Which neatly segues into another small-scale change : Instead of squawking the love composition from Tchaikovsky ’s " Romeo and Juliet " before " osculate the young lady , " Scuttle does an odd rap in the remaking . I will not comment further on this .

ADDED: “Wild Uncharted Waters.”

I was in the beginning on the fencing about this one , having hear it without context , but Eric ’s " I want " Sung really work tremendously well within the moving picture itself . In my opinion , anyway . He ’s just as into Ariel !   He ’s just a little straw hat weirdie ! They ’re utter for each other !

If someone wants to edit out this audio frequency over Troy Bolton ’s " Bet on It " visuals … I’m here for it , is all I ’m saying .

AXED: “Daughters of Triton.”

AMENDED: “Poor Unfortunate Souls.”

Basically , the bit where Ursula tries to convince Ariel that it ’s fine for her to give up her articulation because man are n’t into woman talking is scrapped . Menkensaidof the change , " We have some revisions in ' pitiable Unfortunate Souls ' regarding lines that might make immature girls somehow feel that they should n’t verbalise out of turn , even though Ursula is clear control Ariel to give up her voice . " RIP " BODY LANGUAGE . "

ADDED: “The Scuttlebutt.”

This is the most egregious use of Lin - Manuel ’s flow I ’ve ever heard ( thus far ) .

ADDED/AMENDED: “Part of Your World (Reprise II).”
