" Some people suggested that he and I did drug together because he has tattoos and I am apparent . We must be up to witchcraft ! "
Warning: Some discussion of drug use.
As part ofJohn Mulaney’s new Netflix special,Baby J, he explained how a mishap withPete Davidsonled to a nurse at the rehab center he attended waking him up from a drug-induced sleep.
For context, John attended rehab for two months in 2020. His Netflix special heavily features tales of his drug use and subsequent sobriety, dismantling his “nice” image in the process.
One such story stemmed from when John was given thesedative Libriumshortly after entering rehab, and he had a nurse by his side to ensure that he stayed asleep.
“My good friendPete Davidsonstarts calling me. Yes, that one. Pete was not at my intervention because he was traveling that night. But now he’s landed, he’s found out I’m in rehab, and he’s concerned,” John recalled.
that was so stupid and sport . Thanks @nbcsnl
“Fun fact about Pete: He changes his cell phone number constantly. I don’t know why, that’s his journey. But every month and a half I get a text from Pete and it says, ‘Yo, it’s Pete, new number.’ And I go, ‘Send a pic to prove it.'”
“For a long time, I just kept saving him again and again as Pete Davidson. At one point, I had nine Pete Davidsons saved in my phone,” John continued. “So I started to save him under fake famous people’s names, just to mix it up. For a while, he was saved in my phone as Rodney Dangerfield. The week I went to rehab, he was saved in my phone asAl Pacino.”
However, the fake name was what led to a mix-up with the nurse: “What the nurse sees on the phone is that this unconscious patient is getting not one, not two, but five missed calls from Oscar winner Al Pacino. So she fucking wakes me up. I don’t blame her, I would have been so curious.”
As for what John said on the phone, he meekly said, “Oh dawg, I’m not doing that well. Oh yeah, no one’s gonna blame you.”
“I said that last part because some people suggested that he and I did drugs together because he hastattoosand I am plain. We must be up to witchcraft! I’ve never done drugs with Pete, he’s always been supportive of my sobriety,” John added.
Pete has also been open aboutattending rehabover the years himself, evenjokingonSNLin 2017, “I went to rehab, and here’s some advice — never pick the rehab you want to go to while you’re high, because that’s what I did.”
