" I did n’t know that it could do that ! "

This week, singer JoJo took to TikTok to reveal that she had some issues with her lip filler.

“A few months ago, maybe three months ago, right before I came toNew York, I got my lip filler dissolved because it had started to migrate,” JoJo shared. “I didn’t know that it could do that. I thought it was just gonna metabolize and dissolve and go away over time.”

“No, it got lumpy underneath here. I would run my tongue along it and be like, ‘What the fuck is going on?’ I had my lip filler dissolved and really glad I did.”

“Even if there are some remnants of something in there — there probably is — I’m very happy with the way it looks because this is natural; it’s my face. It’s me.”

“I’m also not mad that I experimented with it,” JoJo continued. “I was curious. I liked it for a while. Then, when I didn’t like it, thankfully, it’s something I was able to go back and look like my natural self.”

I spoke withDr. Thomas P. Sterry, an NYC-based board-certified plastic surgeon and clinical assistant professor of plastic surgery at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, who regularly performs cosmetic procedures as well as injectables.

“Migration is not super uncommon with lip filler,” Dr. Sterry said. “The mouth is a place with a lot of movement, and when overfilled, the product may begin to shift.”

“The most obvious sign of migration is when you see an increase in volume over the vermillion border that causes a puffy and less defined-looking appearance. This may also cause patients to see a shadow effect above the lip line.”

“The best way to prevent migration is to avoid getting filler too frequently to avoid overfilling, as well as visiting an experienced injector that will assess the case appropriately,” Dr. Sterry said.

But if it does happen, Dr. Sterry said it is fixable. “If a patient experiences migration, the best thing they can do is dissolve the product or allow the product to dissolve on its own as this occurs over time.”

If the filler is a hyaluronic acid-based filler — like Juvederm or Restylane — then the doctor can use a dissolvent called hyaluronidase.

Still, you should aways go to a qualified, licensed injector, and never overfill your lips!
