Miley Cyruswas asked about the extent of which her divorce fromLiam Hemsworthin 2020 has impacted her latest music.
You’re likely aware that Miley’s number one hit from earlier this year, “Flowers,” has beenheavily theorizedto be about Liam — from the lyrics, to the release date (Liam’s birthday), to certain wardrobe choices in the music video.
Speaking toBritish Vogue, Miley denied that the song acted as a diary of her experience. “I never need to be a master at the craft of tricking an audience,” she said. “It will set itself on fire all by itself.”
“I wrote it in a really different way. The chorus was originally: ‘I can buy myself flowers, write my name in the sand, but I can’t love me better than you can.’ It used to be more, like, 1950s. The saddest song. Like: ‘Sure, I can be my own lover, but you’re so much better,’” she continued.
“The song is a little fake it till you make it,” she added of the song’s final iteration. “Which I’m a big fan of.”
According to the profile, Miley doesn’t want any of her music — includingEndless Summer Vacation— to be seen as directly about Liam. Instead, she sees her work as being closer to that of a novelist who takes inspiration from her real life.
“I wouldn’t erase my story or want it to be erased,” she said of her split with Liam. “Having an interesting life makes for interesting storytelling.”
