" You see it all too often , but this type of ravisher is a intemperate no for me . "
It’s only natural to have a handful of food “pet peeves” you can’t stand (and don’t understand how others don’t agree). So redditoru/ahfansaerdetasked, “What’s somethingyou dislike in a dishthat other people seem to love or that seems to be completely accepted in the cooking world?” Here’s some of what people said.
.“When lettuce isn’t bite-size, unless it’s deliberately served whole and meant to be sliced (say, in a grilled lettuce salad). But if I’m eating something like romaine in a classic Caesar, I really shouldn’t have to work to cut up my lettuce.”
.“Tails on shrimp in any dish that isn’t meant to be eaten by hand. Specifically, Ihatepasta with shrimp where you either have to try to get the tail off with a knife and fork or you reach in to grab it and get your hands all messy. And please don’t tell me to just eat the shells. Yuck.”
.“Anytime someone slips celery into a dish or cuisine that doesn’t normally call for this vegetable. Yes, it adds crunch. It also makes the whole damn dish taste like celery.”
.“Any dish that has cherry tomatoes just dumped onto the plate whole so that they roll around as you chase them with your fork. Halve those tomatoes, people!”
.“Ice cream cones. I hate eatingice creamfrom a cone. It’s so messy. You can basically guarantee that whatever it is you’re wearing will be covered in whatever flavor ice cream you’re eating. I also hate the feeling of sticky hands afterward.”
.“An overly fatty cut of meat at a restaurant. I can’t stand when you order a meat dish and half of it is fat. I ordered pork adobo recently, and when the dish arrived, at least half the pork was pure fat. It immediately ruined the meal for me.”
.“Whole artichokes that involve peeling each petal from the cooked artichoke and stripping the edible part off with your teeth. What a pain in the ass. They’re so difficult to eat for such little payoff.”
.“Being served those huge, overstuffed sushi rolls that have like four layers of ingredients on top of the rice. Do I attempt to stuff the entire thing into my mouth and hope I don’t choke? Do I try to take a bite out of it and have the rest completely fall apart? Fancy sushi adds way too much anxiety to my life.”
.“Raisins baked or cooked into foods like oatmeal cookies, carrot cake, or stuffing. I love all of these foodswithoutraisins, but when raisins are involved, I end up spending my time digging them out.”
.“Chicken stews or casseroles served with bone-in pieces of meat. Why on earth would I want bones in a sticky dish that I’ll have to either awkwardly pick away at with a knife and fork or use my hands with? Boneless chicken for the win here.”
.“Mussels like moules frites or marinières. In theory I love ordering mussels at a restaurant, and I know this shellfish opens when cooked, but you still have to pry them out of their shells one by one. It makes each bite of food take exponentially longer and makes eating this dish sort of a messy chore.”
.“Any salad that isn’t chopped. Ordering salad at a restaurant and getting an un-chopped one is infuriating to me. This is especially egregious when the salad is served on a small plate and I only have a dull butter knife to work with. Let the chef with achef’s knifedo the chopping. It’s no wonder so many Americans don’t like salads: They’ve never had a well-balanced, chopped salad, and instead they get a plate of full leaves, giant rings of raw onions, and huge tomato slices. All salads should be chopped before they’re served!”
.“Foods drizzled with truffle oil, like truffle fries. I’m so glad the big truffle oil fad has mostly died down. Everything smelled and tasted like a stale armpit for a while.”
.“I really dislike when fruit is sneaked into savory dishes — for example, mango or pineapple in pico de gallo or berries in a salad. You see it all too often. These types of dishes are a hard no for me.”
.“When you order a dish with a nice golden-brown coating on a protein (like crispy chicken thighs), but then it’s covered with a salad or sauce. By the time your plate gets to the table, it’s wet and no longer crispy. I get that it’s done for aesthetics, but I want maximum crunch, not a soggy protein.”
.“My husband has a big issue with sweet and savory elements combined in a dish. He’s very anti-pineapple on pizza, pork chops with applesauce, teriyaki sauce on chicken, etc. I love all of these things, but he can’t stand the sweet-and-savory flavor combination.”
.“Big slices of raw onion in my salad. This just totally ruins the flavor, and I’m going to pluck all the onions out. Just put chopped onion in a dish on the side.”
.“Large amounts of mayo used on sandwiches or burgers. I feel like lots of delis and restaurants go heavy on the mayo, so I typically just go without. There’s nothing worse than a big glob of mayonnaise (especially if the sandwich is hot, which makes it even worse).”
.“Sweet potatoes and sweet potato fries. Why are these so often served as a side? Regular potatoes and regular fries are superior in every way!”
.“Meringue. The feeling of meringue on my teeth is the sensory equivalent of nails on a chalkboard. Add it’s so overly sweet. I just can’t understand why it’s a delicacy.”
.“Nuts in bread. I like bread and I like nuts, but don’t put them together, please. Bread is soft, and it’s weird to have crunchy bits floating around in it.”
.“When restaurants serve homemade ketchup or fancy condiments. I might be simple, but nothing tastes as good and as texturally perfect as classic Heinz ketchup. Just give me the basic stuff and save the ‘upgraded’ homemade version.”
