" you could keep things as they are properly now — I just wo n’t be participate . ”
Nonbinary actorLiv Hewsonpulled their name out of consideration for this year’s PrimetimeEmmy Awardsdue to the lack of inclusivity in the categories.
In a recentVarietyinterview, theYellowjacketsstar announced that they were withdrawing their name from the running for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
“There’s not a place for me in the acting categories,” Liv told Variety. “It would be inaccurate for me to submit myself as an actress. It neither makes sense for me to be lumped in with the boys.”
They continued, “It’s quite straightforward and not that loaded. I can’t submit myself for this because there’s no space for me.”
Liv still has a fear that even if the Television Academy attempts to include more neutral or nongendered categories, women will still earn less recognition, while cis white men will continue to benefit.
“There is an implied fatalism there, which suggests that we’ve all agreed that equality is impossible. And that’s sad,” Liv said.
“We’re not going to start awarding best female and male director, or female or male cinematographer. Because we all understand that implicitly would be insulting.”
Ultimately, Liv admitted that they’re okay with keeping the categories as they are for right now — they just won’t be participating.
